Dental Hygienist

Prevention is the best medicine.

The hygienists at our dental practices primarily aid patients in the prevention and treatment of gum disease. They will provide you with all the tools on how best to preserve dental hygiene, as well as how to keep your mouth healthy.

Thus, our dental care professionals advise their patients to visit the hygienist regularly, as part of a preventative treatment plan.

Why visit the hygienist?

  • Oral health advice - Tailored to your needs, with extensive periodontal therapy. Their advice may call for implant maintenance, scaling of your teeth or how to eliminate plaque and tartar, which extends below the gum-line. This is essential for those with gum (periodontal) disease.

  • Prevent disease - Our hygienists are also adept at using the latest UltraSonic scalers and instruments used in preventing, stabilizing and treating gum disease. Thus, you’ll be able to prevent dental problems, but with less dental treatment and costs for you!

  • Scale & polish hygiene treatment - To avoid tartar and plaque build-up, seeing a dental hygienist for a clean and polish is essential to preserving dental hygiene, as well as preventing gum disease. This process begins by first examining your oral health, then we progress towards the deep cleaning. This is when we remove all plaque build-up and stains in your teeth through scaling. We then end the process by polishing your teeth, so that you leave with a bright and shiny smile

Why visit the hygienist?

  • Prevent bad breath - Bad breath can often be caused by gum disease. Regular scaling by your hygienist can prevent this along with diet advice.

  • Remove tooth staining - Stains will require professional cleaning, they may be caused by smoking, tea, coffee, wine etc.

  • Maintain dental implants - Regular maintenance is required and will vary depending on the amount of implants, fillings, crowns etc., that you have. This way, you’ll always stay on top of your dental care needs.

Key facts to remember

Plaque is a major cause of gum disease

Plaque is a sticky film that’s filled with bacteria. It constantly forms on teeth and, if left unchecked, it can cause gum disease or worse, tooth loss! This is why it’s essential to regularly visit a dental hygienist.

Tartar should be dealt with as soon as possible!

Also known as calculus, tartar is a build-up of hardened plaque that forms on the teeth. In addition, tartar is a build-up of minerals from your saliva, which also hardens and is susceptible to changes in colour due to stains from food and drink. Tartar can cause an array of dental problems, such as gum disease, bad breath as well as destruction of tooth enamel.

It’s imperative that you see your dental hygienist so that any build-up of tartar is stopped swiftly.

Hygiene treatments are typically pain-free!

For most hygiene treatments, you’ll feel no pain whatsoever. Whilst a scale & polish can be slightly uncomfortable for some patients, depending on the severity of their oral health, it’s still not considered a painful treatment. If this is still a concern, we can always make arrangements for phobic patients, whether it be sedation or local anaesthetic – so we’ll do everything we can to make sure you feel comfortable and safe!

FAQ’s

Depending on the treatment, times will vary. For example, a scale and polish should take somewhere between 30 and 60 minutes whereas a general check-up would only take 30 minutes.

Ideally, we advise all patients to visit the dental hygienist once every 3 – 9 months. If, when brushing your teeth, your gums are bleeding then this likely indicates that you have gum disease, and then it becomes even more important that you come to see our experts at Clarendons.
