Restorations

Restoring healthy, happy smiles.

Dental restorations occur when we replace teeth or repair the tooth’s integrity, bone or tissue. Restorative dentistry is a vital part of what we do, as losing even a small part of one tooth can be extremely uncomfortable, painful and unsafe. At Clarendons, we wish to make this restorative process as easy for you as possible!

This process can take many forms, and varies from dental crowns and bridges to implants.

At our state-of-the-art dental practice, we have some of West Yorkshire’s finest dental practitioners - all of whom are ready and waiting to restore that wonderful smile of yours!

Why restore my teeth?

Whilst it may seem that restorations are only necessary when there’s pain or an unpleasant appearance, restorative dentistry can also be carried out in advance, so as to prevent the need for major restorations down the line. Some of the most common causes for why restorations are so important, are as follows:

  • Loss of enamel - this causes increased sensitivity and would need to be restored with fillings.

  • Cracked, chipped teeth - this can be a painful issue, however, your dentist will be able to restore the tooth back to its original size, by putting in place a dental crown.

  • Missing teeth - occasionally, a patient will have one or several missing teeth, whereby the most common restoration method will be to receive dental implants. This will enable the patient to once more have a full set of teeth, which will help with talking and eating.

More about Restorations

Direct Restoration

This is when the restoration is directly applied to the existing tooth. This is not as invasive as indirect restoration, because the dentist keeps the existing tooth intact, whilst simultaneously repairing the tooth / improving its appearance. An example of a direct restoration would be a Filling, for example. This is because the existing tooth remains intact, whilst also being repaired during the restorative treatment.

Indirect Restoration

This is where much of the restoration takes place externally, i.e. the usage of a dental laboratory to prepare a prosthetic. This way, when the dentist applies the restoration, it will match the patients’ exact requirements. An example of this would be a Dental Implant, as an implant requires scans, lab work etc. in order to accurately measure the size / shape of the patient’s mouth and teeth. This is all necessary, in order for the implant to be a perfect fit.

Key facts to remember

After restorative treatment, your eating habits should change

For the 24 hours following restorative treatment, you should stick to eating soft / cold foods as your teeth’s sensitivity levels will be heightened. This is simply a precautionary measure that’s advised by your dentist so as to ensure a smooth recovery from the treatment.

Restorations may take place over two visits

Depending on the type of restorative treatment you’re undergoing, the treatment time will vary. For example, a filling shouldn’t take more than an hour whereas crowns or veneers will generally require two visits. This is because the first visit is needed in order to shape the restoration, and the second visit for implementing it.

Anaesthetic may be required

This is to ensure an entirely pain-free experience! At Clarendons, we’ll endeavour to ensure that our patients receive a luxury dental care experience. One way in which we achieve this is by understanding when anaesthetics are required, and when they’re not. This way, you’ll receive first-class restorative treatment without any pain whatsoever!

FAQ’s

The purpose of restorative treatment is in the name, to restore your mouth and teeth to its ideal/original form! This may be to restore its appearance, or to restore its functionality.

Whilst this can depend on the placement of the restoration, i.e. somewhere you bite all the time, we can predict that indirect restorations last longer than direct restorations. That being said, with proper care and following your dentist's guidance, some restorations can last up to 25-30 years!
