FAQ’s
What is a white tooth filling?
A white tooth filling is a tooth coloured filling “composite”, that’s used to rebuild the shape of a tooth to its original structure. Fillings are needed in order to mend damage caused by tooth decay.
What makes up the white filling materials?
The colour comes from tooth coloured resin, whereas its strength derives from being mixed with clear glass particles. This filling is inert and does not react with body tissues.
What are the advantages of having a white filling??
A white filling comes with many advantages, the most obvious being its high aesthetic value. Furthermore, it’s tooth coloured so it’s hard to spot and thus it’s not comparable to silver fillings in this regard.
Technically, placing a white filling requires less removal of the healthy tooth tissue, as compared to a silver filling.
When do I need to get my existing fillings replaced?
Eventually all fillings need to be replaced, however this is something that your dentist will be able to identify – which is why regular check-ups at the dentist are so important.
What are the risks or disadvantages of having a white filling?
As with any filling, white fillings can have their own drawbacks. Placing a white filling involves removal of decayed tooth structures. The filling itself may fracture and the larger it is, the greater the risk of fracturing it. Moreover, placing a white filling requires an experienced dentist, as the edges have to be fully dry to prevent decay to the edges of the filling. Finally, teeth that have a white filling can require, in 1% of cases, a root canal treatment at some point.
What are the alternatives?
Alternatives to white composite fillings are silver amalgam fillings and inlays or onlays.
Can excessive biting or bruxism affect a white filling?
Yes, excessive biting and habits like bruxism can cause the filling to break. Moreover, such habits can cause the tooth in which the white filling is located, to break or crack.
Will a white filling ever lose its colour?
Yes, with time the tooth itself can lose colour and that is when the filling becomes visible. Moreover, the filling may be discoloured due to pigments in food, coffee, wine and tobacco.
