Numbing the Area:

  • Local Anaesthesia: The dentist will administer a local anaesthetic to numb the area around the tooth being extracted. This may involve an injection that could feel like a small pinch.

Post Operative Instructions

Please follow the guidelines detailed below to ensure a smooth recovery:

1. Diet: You may continue to eat and drink as normal. However, while the numbness persists, be cautious not to bite or burn yourself. If you're finding it difficult to eat regular food, consider soft and cool alternatives.

2. Discomfort and Pain: It's normal to experience discomfort, limited mouth opening, and/or swelling at the extraction site for up to a week. Over-the-counter painkillers can be used to alleviate these symptoms. Please adhere strictly to the recommended dosage and instructions. The discomfort should start to subside after the first 48 hours and continue to improve each day.

3. Please avoid the following activities:

- Smoking and Alcohol Consumption: These may hamper the healing process at the extraction site. We recommend abstaining from these activities for 48-72 hours prior to your extraction.

- Exercise and Excessive Oral Hygiene: Vigorous activities and excessive spitting/rinsing/cleaning or touching of the extraction site could disturb the clot, leading to re-bleeding.

4. Bleeding: Mild traces of blood in your mouth or saliva are normal. However, if there is significant bleeding, sit upright, roll up a clean handkerchief or gauze, place it over the socket, and bite down to apply light pressure on the extraction site for 30 minutes.

If the bleeding persists or the pain intensifies, please contact us by replying to this email or by calling us on 01132459004.

For out-of-hours emergencies, call 111.

Should you experience severe bleeding or swelling that impacts your breathing, please visit A&E immediately.

Post Sedation Instructions (if you have had Sedation)

1. Support: Ensure you have an adult to drive you home and accompany you for the next 24 hours, until the effects of the IV sedation have completely worn off.

2. Rest: We advise you to take it easy and rest for the remainder of the day post-procedure.

3. Activities: Please refrain from engaging in any hazardous activities, including driving, operating heavy machinery, or looking after children alone for the next 24 hours.

4. Decisions: Avoid signing any legal documents or making important decisions until you are fully mentally alert, which should be at least 24 hours after the sedation.

5. Diet: Avoid heavy meals immediately after your appointment. If you feel hungry, opt for a light meal instead.

6. Health: In case of nausea, lie down until the feeling subsides. If the symptoms persist or become intense, contact your dentist immediately.

7. Alcohol: Please abstain from consuming alcohol after receiving IV conscious sedation (for 24-48hrs)

8. Memory Loss: Don't be alarmed if you can't recall the events that took place while you were sedated. This is a common occurrence known as amnesia.

10. Health Concerns: If you need advice please contact us by replying to this email or by calling us on 01132459004.

FAQs

LOCAL ANAESTHETIC

  • Not at all. Before the extraction, your dentist will administer an anesthetic to ensure your comfort. Typically, a local anesthetic is used to numb the extraction site, so you’ll be awake and aware of the sounds around you but won’t feel any pain.

  • Most extractions take only 10-15 including anesthetic administration and any necessary stitches. If multiple teeth are being extracted, it may take a bit longer.

  • After administering a local anesthetic, your dentist will gently remove the tooth and cover the empty socket with gauze. Stitches may be used to close the gum tissue, especially if the tooth is impacted or multiple extractions are performed.

  • Swelling is a common side effect following a tooth extraction, and your cheeks may be puffy for a few days. To minimize swelling, apply an ice pack for the first 48 hours—20 minutes on, 20 minutes off—and then alternate between heat and cold. Be sure to take any prescribed pain medication as directed.

  • During the initial recovery period, stick to a soft or liquid diet to aid healing. It’s important to nourish your body with healthy options—consider soups, yogurt, pureed foods, and liquid meal replacements rather than just ice cream!

  • Recovery time varies based on several factors, including the complexity of the extraction and your overall oral health. Typically, we recommend taking it easy for the first 2 to 3 days. Once the surgical site has clot completely, you can gradually resume physical activities.

SEDATION

  • You will feel deeply relaxed and at ease during your treatment, and many patients find that they don’t remember much of the procedure afterward. While some may doze off, you will remain conscious, enabling you to communicate your comfort levels and needs throughout the treatment.

  • Our priority is to ensure your dental care is as comfortable and pain-free as possible, with or without sedation. Even during sedation, a local anaesthetic will be applied to numb the treatment area, minimizing any discomfort.

  • You need to be at home resting for 24 hours after your sedation as you may feel a bit drowsy or fatigued, so taking the day off is essential to recover.

  • Yes, you must have a responsible adult accompany you to your appointment. They should stay at the Dental Practice during your treatment and drive you home afterward. It’s also required that someone stays with you for the rest of the day.

  • Some medications can influence your ability to receive sedation. Before your treatment, you’ll have a consultation with your dentist and a sedation assessment with a nurse. Please bring a comprehensive list of all medications you’re taking, along with your complete medical history and any known allergies.

  • General anesthesia renders you fully unconscious and can only be administered by an anesthetist in a hospital setting. In contrast, sedation can be provided at your dental practice, allowing you to remain conscious and maintain your breathing and protective reflexes throughout the procedure.
