What to expect on the day of treatment

Local Anaesthetic

Does the procedure hurt?

Not at all. Before the extraction, your dentist will administer an anesthetic to ensure your comfort. Typically, a local anesthetic is used to numb the extraction site, so you’ll be awake and aware of the sounds around you but won’t feel any pain.

Post Sedation Instructions

  1. Support: Ensure you have an adult to drive you home and accompany you for the next 24 hours, until the effects of the IV sedation have completely worn off.
  2. Rest: We advise you to take it easy and rest for the remainder of the day post-procedure.
  3. Activities: Please refrain from engaging in any hazardous activities, including driving, operating heavy machinery, or looking after children alone for the next 24 hours.
  4. Decisions: Avoid signing any legal documents or making important decisions until you are fully mentally alert, which should be at least 24 hours after the sedation.
  5. Diet: Avoid heavy meals immediately after your appointment. If you feel hungry, opt for a light meal instead.
  6. Health: In case of nausea, lie down until the feeling subsides. If the symptoms persist or become intense, contact your dentist immediately.
  7. Alcohol: Please abstain from consuming alcohol after receiving IV conscious sedation (for 24-48hrs)
  8. Memory Loss: Don't be alarmed if you can't recall the events that took place while you were sedated. This is a common occurrence known as amnesia.
  9. Medication: Continue taking any prescribed medications as advised by your dentist.
  10. Health Concerns: If you need advice please contact us by replying to this email or by calling us on 01132459004. For out-of-hours emergencies, call 111. Should you experience unusual symptoms, severe bleeding or swelling that impacts your breathing, please visit A&E immediately.

Post-operative instruction

Please follow the guidelines detailed below to ensure a smooth recovery:

  1. Diet: You may continue to eat and drink as normal. However, while the numbness persists, be cautious not to bite or burn yourself. If you're finding it difficult to eat regular food, consider soft and cool alternatives.
  2. Discomfort and Pain: It's normal to experience discomfort, limited mouth opening, and/or swelling at the extraction site for up to a week. Over-the-counter painkillers can be used to alleviate these symptoms. Please adhere strictly to the recommended dosage and instructions. The discomfort should start to subside after the first 48 hours and continue to improve each day.
  3. Please avoid the following activities:
    • Smoking and Alcohol Consumption: These may hamper the healing process at the extraction site. We recommend abstaining from these activities for 48-72 hours prior to your extraction.
    • Exercise and Excessive Oral Hygiene: Vigorous activities and excessive spitting/rinsing/cleaning or touching of the extraction site could disturb the clot, leading to re-bleeding.
  4. Bleeding: Mild traces of blood in your mouth or saliva are normal. However, if there is significant bleeding, sit upright, roll up a clean handkerchief or gauze, place it over the socket, and bite down to apply light pressure on the extraction site for 30 minutes.

If the bleeding persists or the pain intensifies, please contact us by replying to this email or by calling us on +47 333 78 901.

For out-of-hours emergencies, call 111.

Should you experience severe bleeding or swelling that impacts your breathing, please visit A&E immediately.
