FAQ’s

You should always try and book an appointment with your routine dentist first, if they are closed or unable to accommodate you at short notice you are welcome to book an appointment with us by calling 0113 2459004

If you need to see a dentist out of hours, call your dentist as their answerphone may advise where to get out-of-hours treatment. Alternatively call NHS 111 to find an out-of-hours dental service near you

Don’t contact your GP, as they won’t be able to offer emergency or out-of-hours emergency dental care.

The sooner you are seen by a dentist the better, however, you can take some over the counter painkillers such as Ibuprofen or Paracetamol whilst you are waiting. You must read the label first and always follow the recommended dosage. For best effects, remember to take painkillers at regular intervals and never go over the maximum dose.

When the nerve dies in a tooth an abscess may develop. This often causes the tooth to become tender to bite on and a painful swelling develops. An infected swelling would usually feel quite tender and warm to the touch. To relieve the pain and to prevent the swelling from spreading, you may need antibiotics and the abscess draining before treatment can be completed.

Although it may not hurt, it's important to repair it quickly to reduce the chances of bacteria getting into the tooth. This will prevent damage to the nerve which may cause an abscess to develop.

It is possible to temporarily replace a filling with chewing gum! Always use sugar free gum, which can be chewed up and inserted into the cavity. Remember not to chew on the tooth in the meantime.

Alternatively, your local pharmacy will sell temporary filling paste.

Most simple fractures can be restored using composites. But if there was any damage to the pulp you would need further treatment.

Bleeding gums can be an early sign of gum disease. If gum disease is allowed to develop it can cause bad breath, lost teeth and pain. You may lose multiple teeth if gum disease is not treated. A same day emergency appointment will not often make a difference and it's better to book a comprehensive dental examination call followed by regular hygiene visits. Call 01132459004 and request an examination and hygiene appointment.

Missing restoration can ruin your smile. It will also allow bacteria to get into your tooth which may cause the tooth to discolour and for it to become painful. If left untreated, ultimately the nerve may die and an abscess may develop.

If you must, you can attempt to re-attach your restoration using a small amount of temporary filling paste, which can be purchased from your local pharmacy. NEVER use household glues or superglue.

However, it's always best and safer to keep your crown clean/secure, and bring it to your emergency dental appointment. Our dentists will examine the tooth and will advise whether or not any treatment is required before re-cementing or replacing the crown. Please click to book an appointment, or Call 01132549004.

Most broken dentures are easy to repair. Clean it thoroughly and bring it with you to your dental appointment free of any denture adhesive. Do not attempt to repair the denture yourself as this can make it more complicated and costlier to repair. In most cases dentures can be repaired within 24-48 hours.

If you've had an accident and have damaged your teeth, contact us on 01132459004 for an appointment to assess the damage. If your tooth is knocked out of alignment, it will require emergency dental treatment. This can be to gently push it back and splint it into position. The sooner this is done the better, as this may save your tooth.

If a tooth has been knocked out by trauma:

1. If possible, re-insert the tooth into the gum (the right way round) and bite down gently on a clean cloth, to hold it in place and reduce the bleeding.

2. Do not touch any of the roots or attempt to clean it in any way. Always handle the tooth by the crown.

3. If the tooth can’t be replaced, then it should be stored in a small pot. Ensure that it's covered in milk or saliva to keep it moist. Bring the tooth with you when you come for your emergency appointment.
