Seal them. Save them.

Fissure Sealants
The chewing surfaces of back teeth have deep grooves and pits that are notoriously difficult to clean — even with perfect brushing. That’s why cavities most commonly start here in children. Fissure sealants are a thin, protective plastic coating painted over these grooves, creating a smooth barrier that seals out food and bacteria. Applied in a single painless appointment, they protect the tooth for years.

Evidence is clear: children with sealants have far fewer cavities in sealed teeth. They’re a no-brainer preventative treatment for most children — and even some adults. At Clarendons, we apply sealants to new adult molars as they erupt (typically around ages 6 and 12) to prevent cavities before they have a chance to start.

What are fissure sealants?
A fissure sealant is a thin, plastic resin coating applied to the chewing surface of a tooth — typically the molars and premolars where deep grooves (fissures) are most prone to trapping food and bacteria.
The tooth is cleaned and dried, a mild etchant is briefly applied to help the sealant bond, and the liquid resin is painted into the grooves. A blue curing light sets it hard in seconds. The sealant effectively smooths out the groove, making the tooth surface easier to clean and dramatically reducing cavity risk. Sealants typically last 5–10 years and are easily replaced if worn.

Features and benefits
Fissure sealants are a purely preventative treatment. No drilling, no anaesthetic, no discomfort. The tooth is simply cleaned, the sealant painted on, and set with a light.
Sealed teeth have far fewer cavities than unsealed teeth. Studies show up to 80% reduction in decay in molars that would otherwise be high-risk.
A single sealant takes 5–10 minutes. A full set of sealants on all molars and premolars can be completed in one appointment. Affordable preventative care with years of benefit.

The Clarendon's Difference
Every filling a child avoids is a win — for their teeth, for their comfort, for their long-term dental health. Fissure sealants are one of the simplest, most effective preventative treatments in paediatric dentistry, yet many children never receive them. At Clarendons, we proactively recommend sealants for children whose molars show deep grooves or decay risk — because we believe in preventing problems, not just treating them.
Our award-winning clinic in Leeds city centre applies sealants quickly, painlessly and precisely. Friendly team, kid-friendly techniques, thorough explanations for both child and parent. We’ll check existing sealants at each routine visit and replace any that have worn down. It’s proactive, preventative dentistry — exactly the kind of care your child deserves.

THE BRAND PATIENTS TRUST

How much do fissure sealants cost?
Fissure sealants are priced per tooth and are among our most affordable preventative treatments. A full set of sealants on all susceptible molars and premolars is usually still modest in total cost. At your child’s consultation, we’ll assess which teeth benefit from sealants and provide clear pricing.
