Lingual Braces

Lingual Braces

The only truly invisible orthodontic option

Lingual braces sit behind your teeth — completely hidden from view. Not “less visible” like clear aligners or ceramic brackets. Actually invisible. For adults who need comprehensive orthodontic treatment but can’t have any visible hardware — performers, public-facing professionals, brides and grooms — they’re the gold standard.

Every lingual brace is custom-made to fit the back surface of your teeth precisely. The technology is sophisticated, the aesthetics unbeatable, and the results as good as traditional braces for most cases. At Clarendons, our specialist orthodontic care in the heart of Leeds delivers lingual braces with the expertise they demand.

What are lingual braces?

Orthodontics, hidden from view

  • Lingual braces are traditional orthodontic braces fitted to the back (tongue side) of your teeth instead of the front. They use the same principle as standard braces — brackets bonded to teeth connected by an adjustable wire — but positioned where nobody can see them.

  • Modern lingual systems like Incognito use custom-made brackets, each one designed specifically for the tooth it sits on, for a precise fit and optimal tooth movement. Treatment duration is similar to traditional braces: typically 12–24 months.

Features and benefits

No visibility, no compromise

  • Truly invisible

Fitted behind your teeth, lingual braces are completely hidden from view. No one will know you’re in orthodontic treatment — not colleagues, not clients, not photographs.

  • Works for complex cases

Unlike clear aligners (which have limits for severe cases), lingual braces handle the full range of orthodontic issues — including complex rotations, vertical movements and significant crowding.

  • Custom-crafted precision

Every bracket is custom-designed for your specific tooth anatomy. The personalised fit delivers more predictable results and faster treatment than generic brackets.

The Clarendon's Difference

Hidden braces, expertly fitted

  • Lingual braces are technically demanding — the inner surfaces of teeth are harder to access, brackets are smaller, and precision is critical. At Clarendons, we only offer lingual braces because we have the expertise to deliver them properly. Custom systems like Incognito bring the latest technology to every case, giving our patients the same quality results as traditional orthodontics — entirely invisible.

  • Our award-winning clinic in Leeds city centre supports you throughout what is a more intensive orthodontic journey. The tongue takes a week or two to adapt. Speech changes slightly at first, then normalises. Our team provides detailed guidance, wax for any irritation, and responsive support. By the end, you’ll have a beautifully straight smile — and no one will know how you got there.

How much do lingual braces cost?

Premium orthodontics. Premium pricing.

Lingual braces are our most premium orthodontic option, reflecting the custom manufacturing, specialist technique and longer appointment times involved. FAQs

Still have questions about lingual braces?

Who are lingual braces best suited for?

Adults who need comprehensive orthodontic treatment but cannot have any visible braces — performers, actors, broadcasters, public-facing professionals, brides and grooms, and anyone who prioritises complete discretion above all else. They’re also ideal for patients whose case is too complex for Invisalign but who don’t want traditional visible braces.

Are lingual braces more uncomfortable than traditional braces?

The initial adjustment period is a little different — you may experience more tongue irritation than cheek/lip irritation (where traditional brackets sit). This usually settles within 2 weeks. We provide orthodontic wax and detailed guidance to manage comfort during adaptation. Once accustomed, most patients find them comfortable for the duration of treatment.

Do lingual braces affect speech?

Yes, initially — for about 1–2 weeks. You may notice a slight lisp or feel your tongue catching on the brackets. This resolves as your tongue adapts to the new structure. Most patients find their speech is entirely normal within 2 weeks. Reading aloud at home in the first few days accelerates adaptation.

Are lingual braces visible at all?

No — when fitted by someone skilled, they’re completely invisible from any normal viewing angle. Unless someone looks directly at the inside of your teeth (which is rare), they won’t know the braces are there. Even in close-up photos, your smile appears completely natural.
